Wisconsin residents are lucky to be in a state with such a terrific university system. They can attend the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee at a reduced rate relative to their out-of-state peers. Where Wisconsin residents see the gross cost of tuition, books, and other academic costs hovering over $10,000, non-residents pay over $22,000 for the same academic experience. On top of these costs, researchers added all the gross living expenses students likely must pay.

When living costs were added to academic expenses, the gross costs for a Wisconsin resident were about $25,000 per year. Non-residents, meanwhile, saw their gross price tag coming in just under $37,000. However, this is before adjustments. The financial aid office applies healthy grants and scholarships to the price and are able to bring costs down. In fact, the average net cost of a year of living and learning in Milwaukee was only $17,000. This figure fell to a mere $11,000 for Milwaukee's lowest income households. The average net price tag only rose to $20,000 for households whose income exceeded $110,000.

Nevertheless, our researchers stepped in to discover what sort of academics were available at UW-Milwaukee. To ascertain the academic qualities available there, they reviewed educational statistics, such as the school's retention rate and graduation rate, among other factors.

The retention rate measures how many first-time, full-time UW-Milwaukee students return to campus for a second year. A high rate of retention indicates that students and their families are generally happy with the school's faculty, curriculum, and campus resources. Since UW-Milwaukee reports a healthy retention rate of 76%, it's clear that the school has a lot of offer its students.

The fifth-highest earning graduates were from the civil engineering program, and reported median earnings of $73,000. The third-highest earners were also engineers who specialized in mechanics. Mechanical engineering graduates reported median earnings of $78,000.
