FIT Tuition Cost & Financial Aid

The cost of attending FIT can vary widely, depending on whether you live in-state or out-of-state, live on campus or commute, and what kind of assistance (in the form of scholarships, grants, or federal student aid) you receive. For example, in a recent academic year, the in-state tuition cost was right around $6,100 and the out-of-state tuition was closer to $16,500, both with an added books and supplies cost of $1,850.

In the same year, the average net price (based on the in-state tuition minus scholarship or grant assistance from the institution, local, state, or federal government) was $8,623. Seventy-three percent of freshman students had some form of financial aid. Six hundred and forty-five students received grant or scholarship aid that totaled $4,423,329, or an average of $6,858 per student. Four hundred eighty-seven students received Pell grants totaling $2,495,021, or about $5,123 per student.

The Fashion Institute of Technology offers a variety of degrees, including certificates, associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, and master's degrees. 226 full-time faculty and 718 part-time faculty instruct over 8,000 students annually across five academic divisions.

  • The School of Art and Design (17 majors - 3,800 students)
  • The Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology (10 majors - 4,000 students)
  • The School of Liberal Arts (two majors and hundreds of classes in humanities)
  • The School of Graduate Studies (advanced professional education)
  • The Center for Continuing and Professional Studies (credit/non-credit courses and certificate programs)

FIT also offers a small number of master's options, from a Master of Arts in Exhibition and Experience Design to a Master of Fine Arts in Fashion Design in addition to two Master of Professional Studies programs.

A student to faculty ratio of 17:1 provides all students with a small classroom size and a hands-on experience to improve their learning experience. This small ratio also ensures that all students have a greater chance of receiving one-on-one attention from their teachers and makes it easier for students to connect.

FIT boasts an 89% retention rate for full-time, first-year students and an 82% retention rate for part-time students. This rate is a measure of how well the school delivers on its promise to students, on how well what they advertise is delivered. Their graduation rate is also an impressive 80%. This rate is a measure of how many students are finishing their degrees in a timely manner.
