HU Tuition Cost & Financial Aid

Students and their families are always interested to know the cost of a college degree. Since Hamline is a private institution, the costs are a bit higher than Minnesota's public colleges and universities. In fact, a full year of tuition, books, supplies, and other academic costs run nearly $47,000. On top of that, students must also find a place to sleep and food to eat. For both on and off-campus living, Hamline reports that room and board expenses run around $12,000, though off-campus living can come with more or less cost, depending on student preference. Thus, the gross cost of a year at Hamline University is around $60,000. However, the gross cost is only part of the story.

After the financial aid office applies scholarships, grants, etc. the net price falls quite a bit below the gross cost. With Hamline’s crackerjack financial aid team, the average net price is about one third of the gross cost: $22,000. This number is even lower for students in the lowest income bracket, who see an average net cost of only $17,000. Costs are likewise contained for the very top income bracket of families earning over $110,000 who have an average net cost of around $28,000, less than half the gross price.

Academics

Hamline University students usually choose this school for one key reason: academic excellence. While each student has their own individual experience in the academic environment, researchers look at key, objective metrics when evaluating educational institutions. In particular, our researchers consider statistics such as the retention rate, graduation rate, and others. The retention rate shows how many first-time, full-time students return to campus for a second year. In this area, Hamline soars. HU's retention rate is a stellar 74%. Based on this retention rate, researchers can conclude that HU's students and their families are very pleased with the school's faculty, curriculum, and campus resources.

For the graduation rate, HU's overall graduation rate is 65%, which is likewise impressive. Given the graduation rate and retention rates, first year students have a high likelihood of graduation with the students they initially arrived with. This consistency in each cohort makes for a cohesive and fun college experience.

When researchers look for the secret to Hamline's success, they may also consider the student-to-faculty ratio. This figure provides a good look into HU's classroom. Since the ratio is 13 to 1, it's clear that Hamline students receive a hands-on education from top notch faculty. With smaller class sizes, students often have more opportunities to pursue individual research projects and to take on unique lines of inquiry in their assignments.

Outcome & Salary

Though there is no guarantee that a college degree will result in any specific job or salary, researchers still seek out data to help prospective students make a decision. In order to project future return on educational investment (ROI), researchers look at how well alumni have fared. Hamline's top earning college degrees are mostly in the business realm, with accountants leading the pack. Whether they start out as accounting clerks or land an analyst position with an investment bank, HU's accounting students report a median annual salary of $62,000. The fifth top-earning degree Hamline reports are the teacher education students who start their careers earning $43,000, with slight variances depending on school district. The middle, median salary is reported by marketing students who report starting their careers at $50,000.
