IU South Bend Tuition Cost & Financial Aid

The Indiana University System is funded by Indiana state taxpayers who appreciate that higher education results in a stronger, growing economy. The state government provides top notch education to state residents at a tremendous discount versus those who migrate from other states for their academic experience. Indeed, IU-SB students are able to study for a year with gross costs that don't exceed $9,000. Out-of-state students pay more than double that rate, with their academic costs rising to nearly $22,000.

On top of the gross academic costs, South Bend students pay between $12,000 and $14,000 for on or off campus living, respectively. Indiana residents face a top gross price tag of around $22,000 and non-residents can pay as much as $35,000. However, the net price is what most families are looking at.

The financial aid office applies scholarships and grants to the gross price tag to deliver a discount to students. Their magic results in an average net cost of under $9,500. This number plummets to $5,500 for the lowest income bracket students but doesn’t exceed $16,000, even for households that earn over $110,000.

Academics

Indiana University students in South Bend are a smart bunch. And they’ve chosen a university with a strong academic reputation that they hope will help them launch a brilliant career. To bolster this reputation, researchers seek out solid academic statistics that express excellence in percentages. Two of the key statistics researchers seek are the retention rate and graduation rate. IU-SB posts a solid retention rate around the national average, with 67% of their first-time, full-time students returning to campus for a second year.

Of those students who return, 38% are reported as graduating on the South Bend campus. Meanwhile 20% more are reported as transferring to other schools, either in the IU system or elsewhere. Since transfer students are typically viewed as highly motivated, researchers surmise that a good number of them graduate, as well. Thus, IU's South Bend campus is assumed to prepare around 58% of its students for graduation.

These strong numbers are due in no small part to IU-SB's student to faculty ratio, which is a stellar 12 to 1. For a public campus with over 4,000 students, this is quite an achievement that offers students a nurturing classroom environment in which to learn and grow.

Outcome & Salary

There are no guarantees in life, much less in higher education. That is, students may want to know what they can earn after graduation, but nobody can be certain. However, researchers have gathered salary information from past graduates so that future and current students can project some sort of expectation. The top earning degrees are led by the registered nursing students who report median salaries of $60,000. Other top earning degrees from South Bend are awarded to computer science students, with median earnings of over $55,000, and business students who claim median salaries of $46,000.
