Tuition Cost & Financial Aid
The cost of attendance at Montana Technological University will depend on the number of credits a student chooses to enroll in. The school calculates the total due by combing direct costs (tuition and fees) and indirect costs (transportation). It’s estimated that the yearly living and learning expenses for in-state undergraduate students taking 12 or more credits is $22,937. Out-of-state students should expect to pay closer to $38,087. Those taking fewer than 12 credits will pay somewhat less for tuition and fees.
Projected expenses for those enrolled in graduate programs are similar, with in-state students enrolled in nine credit hours or more paying around $21,947. The estimated cost for out-of-state graduate students taking the same number of credits is $37,947. Taking fewer credits can decrease financial responsibility, especially for out-of-state students.
MTU uses the projected cost of attendance to determine the maximum amount of aid a student can receive for a given academic year. Approximately 90% of first-time students receive some form of financial aid, whether it be a grant, scholarship, loan, or student employment on campus.

Academics
As one of only two United States schools offering a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in geophysical engineering, Montana Technological University has a reputation for providing a unique and highly coveted education. It is also one of the only schools that have BS degrees in metallurgical engineering, mining engineering, and petroleum engineering.
The student-to-faculty ratio is 14:1 and over 61% of classes have less than 20 students enrolled. Only 7.2% of classes are comprised of more than 50 students, which means most courses provide plenty of opportunities for personalize, one-on-one instruction.
MTU has a 79% retention rate for first year undergraduate students. Retention rates are often considered a good indicator regarding overall student satisfaction. In this case, the rate shows the majority of freshmen choose to remain at the institution for at least a second year. The national average retention rate is 68%, which means the school outperforms many others in the country.
It is also important to know the university’s graduation rate, which helps incoming students determine how long it will take to complete their degree programs. Most programs take four years, but MTU assumes a bachelor’s degree will require six years of coursework. Given this expectation, the school’s graduation rate is 48%, with 27% of students transferring out before their final academic year.
