Oakton Community College is a mid-size, public community college founded in 1969. It’s located in Des Plaines, Illinois, which is a northern suburb of Chicago. The campus is easily accessible by public transportation and major roadways, as well as being surrounded by parks and small lakes. Oakton has a main campus in Des Plaines along with a second location in Skokie, which hosts the Art, Science, and Technology Pavilion.

Overview of Oakton Community College
Originally, the school only offered two-year degrees and non-credit courses. Today, all 8,000+ undergraduate students can choose from thousands of courses, degree programs, non-credit offerings, and continuing education opportunities. Students of all walks of life attend programs at Oakton, including first-generation students, transfer students, adult learners, and many more. The school is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
On campus, students can choose from over 50 clubs and organizations such as social justice, college governance, and ceramics. The school also offers an assortment of campus events, lectures, service activities, and much more. Professional organizations and leadership groups also have a strong presence on campus, as well as recreational and leisurely activities.

Oakton cost $10,446 for in-state tuition and $12,462 for out-of-state residents in a recent academic year, which is significantly higher than the national average for community colleges. Students may also require up to another $11,000 for room and board, books, supplies, and other miscellaneous expenses. And keep in mind that the cost of living for the Chicago metro is higher than most other regions in the country. If a student plans to enjoy all the city has to offer, it’s best to plan to have money budgeted for any live music, theater, museums, nightlife, and other entertainment and dining options you might indulge.
The college provides a number of financial aid packages that include grants, scholarships, and student loans. Over 60% of all students utilize financial aid in some form. You may also be able to take advantage of the Oakton Educational Foundation, which provides grants for Chromebooks, and many students will qualify for the Foundation Sponsorship opportunity.

Despite its classification as a community college, Oakton offers an extensive selection of academic opportunities for any individual in search of higher education. Individuals take courses for any number of reasons such as for a degree, career advancement, skill development, higher pay, the enjoyment of learning, and much more.
Program participants have access to over 2,500 courses in 80 areas of study. All types of education are available including associate degrees, certificates, and non-credit courses. Some of the most popular areas of study include health, science, technology, business, and liberal arts. Three primary education divisions exist at Oakton: business and career technologies, liberal arts and STEM, and career technologies. Honors programs are also available, and several dedicated centers exist for greater educational opportunities.
Many individuals choose to pursue certificates and non-credit courses. In total, 1,500 courses are offered in continuing education in a number of areas such as accounting, landscape painting, video production, and computers. There are also special areas of study and dual credit courses. In addition to the two primary campuses, Oakton has roughly 240 off-site locations spread throughout the Chicago metro to make higher education more accessible to all and students can select from over 90 online courses for even greater flexibility and convenience.
At Oakton, the graduation rates are 20% within four years and 24% within six years, with a more-than-solid retention rate of 76%. The low graduation rates are in direct correlation to a large number of people in pursuit of non-credit courses, transfer students, and career development programs.

Oakton offers a variety of assistance and support geared toward careers and transferring. The Career and Transfer Center is designed to provide resources and guidance for students in search of new career aspirations, job placement, and the transfer of students to four-year higher learning institutions. A number of other resources are offered as well, including career counselors, personal development, job searches, interview preparation, coaching sessions, resume assistance, and more.
Any student can work with the center at any time. They also offer free workshops and a Learning Center. This center helps improve academic performance with tutoring, study skills and degree selection. Many services are offered for free; however, the college charges for some.
