St. Edward’s University is a small, private university founded in 1885. The university is located in the heart of Austin, Texas, with nearly 4,500 students, 88% of whom are undergraduate students. Students will benefit from the Holy Cross designation, its national rankings, and the 19-person average class size. As an elite private school in Texas, St. Edward’s University has a significantly higher cost than even other top private colleges and universities. Fortunately, up to 97% of students are eligible for various forms of financial assistance, including a number of university scholarships and grants. For those who do not gain these financial gifts that do not have to be repaid, student loans are available from many financial institutions and the government. As a result, the net average price of an undergraduate program is $28,214. These expenses don’t include the extra $16,000 or so required for living expenses and course costs outside of tuition.
It’s also important to note that students can work with career services to find employment opportunities as a way to reduce the financial strain upon graduation. Some students will be able to find jobs on campus, including work study in various departments and buildings. Other students may prefer to work off-campus or to secure paid internships. Academic opportunities at St. Edward’s are quite extensive at all degree levels. Science-based and mathematical majors and minors are some of the most popular such as behavioral neuroscience, bioinformatics, chemistry, environmental science and policy, kinesiology, medical laboratory science, and psychology. Students can also pursue a wide range of artistic and religious-based degrees such as animation, acting, ethics and leadership, digital media management, video game development, and religious and theological studies.
Pre-professional programs, dozens of minors, and certifications are also available along with partner programs. Opportunities exist in pre-law, pre-medical, pre-occupational therapy, pre-physical therapy, and pre-veterinary programs. Several certificates are offered for teaching at various levels and partnerships have been established with other universities including Notre Dame, Valparaiso University, Washington University at St. Louis, and the University of Texas Medical Branch.
The challenging curriculum and decent student-to-faculty ratio of 1 to 15 help to secure a solid 79% retention rate. Graduation rates are a little lower than average at 50% and 64% for four and six years, respectively. These lower graduation rates may also be related to the difficult curriculum. This could result in students taking fewer courses at the same time thus adding years to the amount of time it takes to complete a degree. It’s also possible that students transfer before they graduate or that they spend more time with experiential learning opportunities.
