SSU Tuition Cost & Financial Aid

Since Savannah State University is a publicly funded institution, students from Georgia households are able to attend for a reduced cost, relative to non-state residents. In fact, Georgia residents see gross academic costs of around $7,500, which covers tuition, books, and fees associated with their courses. Meanwhile, non-Georgia residents see their gross costs hovering close to $13,000.

Naturally, students need a place to live and food to eat while they study. Room and board costs in Savannah aren't nearly as high as Atlanta, but students pay between $17,000 (in-state) and $23,000 (out-of-state) to cover their cost of living. However, these costs are not the end of the story.

Once the financial aid office applies all relevant grants and scholarships, the net price looks much better. In fact, the average net price for all students of all income levels is under $10,000. That figure includes all living costs. For students in the lowest income bracket, the average net cost falls to under $9,000. Even students from households that earn $110,000 or more pay a mere $14,000 on average.

SSU Academics

Savannah State University is a gem in Georgia's academic landscape. The school's legacy boasts success dating back to the 1800s, and their reputation remains strong. Our researchers, however, are interested to uncover the numbers behind the hype. In particular, researchers look at educational statistics such as the retention rate, graduation rate, and student-to-faculty ratio.

The retention rate measures how many first-time, full-time students return to campus for a second year. Savannah reports a very respectable retention rate of 65%, which is around the national average. Their students are well-educated at SSU and graduate at a rate of 24%, with 43% transferring to other schools. Since transfer students are typically highly motivated to graduate, you might even consider them as de facto graduates, though they might graduate from other schools. Thus, 67% of Savannah State University students have a solid academic foundation that results in graduation.

This is due in no small part to Savannah State's student-to-faculty ratio. Research indicates that when students have smaller class sizes that they are able to learn more and produce better outcomes later. Since SSU's student-to-faculty ratio is 18 to 1, it's clear that students receive the attention they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
