Thomas University (TU), located in Thomasville, Georgia, is a private non-profit institution founded by the Primitive Baptist Church in the 1950s. Though originally the school only offered two-year associate degrees, they now offer degrees through the master's level, both on its South Georgia campus and online. The total student body is 1,500 students, with a near-even graduate/undergraduate split. In the late 1970s, the Primitive Baptists ceded control to a non-sectarian, independent administration.

Popular Academic Programs at TU

Students seek out an education at Thomas University for many reasons. For those in southern Georgia, Thomas represents local access to academic excellence. Our researchers wanted to dig a bit deeper to discover the facts behind TU's reputation. Thus, they investigated the school's retention rate, graduation rate, and other metrics.

The retention rate is a measure of how many first-time, full-time students return to campus for their second year. Research revealed that 36% of Thomas' students are retained year-to-year. This may seem a bit low, but the statistic often includes online students, who are harder to retain for a variety of academic and other reasons.

Research then revealed that Thomas University graduates 67% of its students. This is a tremendous figure that rivals many of the nation's top universities. TU also reported a transfer rate of 33%. Researchers find that most transfer students are highly motivated students who leave to pursue, and complete, their college degree elsewhere. Thus, it could be said that Thomas University prepares nearly every single student for a college diploma, whether in Thomasville or elsewhere.

A good deal of this academic success can be attributed to one metric: Thomas' student-to-faculty ratio. This is a metric that reflects average class size and how well students can access their instructors or professors. Since the average class has 12 students for every instructor, it's clear that Thomas' students are able to have their needs met by faculty members.
