Unitek offers students the option of earning job worthy credentials in as little as nine months. For instance, an accelerated medical assisting diploma takes ¾ of a year. Students who need more time are free to do so. That program is offered as a hybrid online program so that students can schedule work around their professional advancement.

There are also programs available in medical office administration, dental assisting, physical therapist assisting, and six total nursing tracks, including a registered nursing track. For students who are eager to get to work, Unitek has an accelerated route to a BSN that will graduate students in three years. Students even receive assistance passing their nursing exam, the NCLEX. The BSN is offered as a hybrid program for those who need more flexibility. Graduates are now working in hospice care, management, surgical theaters, and intensive care units, among many more professional tracks.

Since Unitek is a private institution, their costs are the same for all students, regardless of their state of residency. Since the tuition is not subsidized by tax dollars, it is a bit higher than public institutions. Thus, students pay over $36,000 for a year of tuition, books, and other fees. On top of this, researchers added average costs of living for Unitek students. The result was a total gross bill of $54,000 per year before financial aid was tallied.

Once the financial aid office applied all relevant scholarships and grants, the net price tag fell quite a bit. In fact, the all-around average net price for a year at Unitek, including living costs, was only $34,000. This number fell slightly for the lowest income students, whose total net price was closer to $33,000. The average net price was exceeded by Unitek's top-earning households, whose earnings exceed $110,000. Those top earners only pay around $37,000.

Unitek College is a private, for-profit institution with several campuses, primarily in California. Students are drawn to the school by the convenient location of its campuses and its reputation for excellence in academia. To validate this reputation, researchers examined Unitek's educational statistics including its retention rate, graduation rate, and other metrics.

The retention rate is important because it measures how many full-time, first-time students return to Unitek for their second year. A high ratio indicates that students are pleased with their overall experience at the college, including its faculty, curriculum, and campus resources. Since Unitek reports an excellent 88% retention rate, it's clear that most students are satisfied.

Unitek's graduation rate is likewise strong. Their students graduate at a rate of 77%, a figure that rivals some of the bigger names in higher education. In fact, most students who enroll at Unitek stay there and graduate. Very few, if any, transfer out to other institutions.

This strong showing in the academic statistics is somewhat surprising given that Unitek shows a student to faculty ratio of 82 students to one instructor. It's thus clear that class sizes aren't everything and that perhaps Unitek has found a way to succeed that eludes other institutions.

Unitek's costs may surprise some, but our research showed that the up-front costs are offset by expectations set by Unitek's alumni. While there are no guarantees of any job opportunity or salary, graduates who responded to a survey reported their experience with their degree. Of those responding, the registered nursing students reported the highest overall earnings. Their median entry level earnings were nearly $120,000. Meanwhile, the fifth highest-earning graduates hold allied health and medical assisting degrees, and their median salary was reported at $37,000. While 4/5 of the top earning degrees were in the healthcare realm, Unitek's computer information technology degree graduates made the top five with a median salary of $50,000.
