The University of the Permian Basin is one of the most affordable schools in Texas. The cost of attending will greatly depend on student residency and whether or not on campus student housing is necessary. For the 2019-2020 academic year, in-state undergraduate students enrolled full-time (15 credits hours or more) spent $8,200 on tuition and fees, whereas out-of-state students spent $9,250. Distance learners paid $9,799 for the year, regardless of residency.

These prices do not include the cost of housing and meals. Students living on campus, in-state or otherwise, paid an additional $10,970. Any books and supplies needed throughout the year are considered an extra expense and not included in the university’s standard calculations.

Graduate tuition and fees are different. While these students are still responsible for the $10,970, if they plan to live and eat on campus, they pay less for classes. Tuition and fees for Texas residents enrolled full-time (nine or more credit hours) pay $3,019 per year. Non-residents pay $3,334 per year. There are also graduate-level distance learning programs available, for which students pay $3,420 per year.

Payment plans are available to students who need them. After paying a $35 enrollment fee, payments are due in four installments.

The University of the Permian Basin offers a variety of financial aid opportunities, including access to federal aid, state aid, scholarships, loans, and student employment. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) helps determine student financial need and dictates how aid is allocated. Approximately 91% of first-time students receive some form of financial aid.

The University of the Permian Basin has much to offer academically, with 35 undergraduate and 18 graduate degree options as part of five different colleges:

The College of Engineering is particularly notable because 100% of UTPB students pass the Fundamental of Engineering Exam. The College of Arts and Sciences is also worth mentioning, as those enrolled have a 70% admission rate to medical school, which is significantly higher than the Texas state average of 45%. Additionally, the College of Nursing has an 82% National Council Licensure Examination pass rate.

As a whole, the university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate and master degrees. It’s important to note, however, that some programs have sought and attained additional accreditation. Agencies of note include the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

The University of the Permian Basin has 178 full-time and 162 part-time faculty members focusing on both instruction and research. This makes the student-faculty ratio 19 to 1, which means students usually have relatively easy access to professors who make sure they are available to answer questions and provide advice.

As of 2019, the University of the Permian Basin had an average first-year undergraduate retention rate of 63% for full-time students and 57% for part-time students. These statistics provide insight regarding the overall student satisfaction after the first academic year. The school has an overall graduation rate of 40% and a transfer-out rate of 28%. Of those who began pursuing bachelor’s degrees in the fall of 2013, 26% graduated within four years and 40% graduated within six years.

According to data provided by the university, just over 82% of students who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2018 reported securing gainful employment. An additional 19% were enrolled in a program of continuing education. It’s worth noting that some departments have better employment ratings than others.
