However, Maine residents are lucky to receive a significant discount on a terrific university education on the University of Maine's Orono campus. They face a gross price tag of around $13,000 for a year of tuition, books, and other academic fees. Meanwhile, non-residents face gross costs exceeding $34,000.

Since college students cannot live on intellectual insights alone, researchers sought out their total gross costs, including all applicable living costs. Once those living costs were tallied, the gross cost for Maine residents reached $27,000. Non-residents saw their gross costs rise to $50,000. However, this is all before the financial aid office applied aid.

After all applicable grants and scholarships were factored into the cost of a year of study in Orono, the financial impact diminished significantly. In fact, the average net cost for a year was a very reasonable $18,000. The net price went as low as $12,000 for UM's lowest earning households. Still, the average net price tag only reached $21,000 for households that earn over $110,000 per year. The fifth highest earning degree came from the registered nursing program, whose alums reported earning $71,000. In the middle of the pack were mechanical engineers, who reported a median base salary of $77,000.
