Overview of University of Mississippi (UM)

This is not to say that Ole Miss students don't have fun; they do. The Oxford campus is full of opportunities to create a well-rounded educational experience. After class, students love to hit the Student Recreation Center, which is home to a fleet of stationary bicycles, loads of free weights, and many more fitness resources. The campus recreation department also offers aquatics, fitness classes, and club sports. There are even off-campus, outdoor adventures that broaden students' horizons with trips to Foster Falls for backpacking, Carlsbad Caverns for spelunking, and Lake Sardis for boating. There are also instructional clinics that are free or very affordable for a student budget.

Ole Miss also offers students a wealth of student organizations that help them become even more well-rounded. Some focus on large issues that face society including religion, politics, and economics. Other campus organizations are more social in nature, such as Greek societies, but these often include an element of public service work.

UM Tuition Cost & Financial Aid

The cost of education is a topic of much discussion these days. However, Ole Miss students find that their education is a terrific value. Since the University of Mississippi is a publicly funded institution, Mississippi state residents receive a terrific discount on tuition, relative to non-state residents. In fact, state residents pay only a little more than $10,000 for a year of tuition, books, and academic fees. Non-residents face a gross-cost price tag of over $27,000 for the same academics.

Once living costs are added to the cost of courses, a year in Oxford runs state residents $27,000, a competitive price among public universities. Out-of-state students, meanwhile, see their gross price tag nearing $44,000. However, the financial aid office is able to reduce these costs for an even more affordable net price.

Once all applicable grants and scholarships are factored in, the average net price for a year on the historic Oxford campus is only $14,000, inclusive of all living costs. This figure falls to under $8,000 for the lowest-earning households. Yet the figure does not exceed $19,000 even for households that report earnings in excess of $110,001.

Academics

Ole Miss is one of the south's premier institutions of higher learning. Its athletic department consistently produces a powerhouse football squad, and the academics are known to be stellar. However, our researchers wanted to dive a bit deeper than a reputation to ascertain the school's true academic prowess. In fact, researchers were not disappointed when they reviewed the school’s retention rate, graduation rate, and other metrics.

A retention rate is a measure of how many first-time, full-time students return to a school for a second year. Since an eye-popping 88% return to campus, researchers see that Ole Miss students are quite happy with their experience on campus. This is further supported by the 68% graduation rate, which shows that incoming, first year students are very likely to graduate with their friends from the first-year dorms.

These strong numbers may be due to many factors. However, researchers look for verifiable metrics. Ole Miss shows them that their student-to-faculty ratio is only 16 to 1, a very strong number, which indicates that students are sure to have ample access to their instructors, even in those larger first year courses, such as English 101.
