Tuition Cost & Financial Aid
John Jay is considered one of the best schools for the price on various ranking lists. The in-state resident tuition price is $7,470 and the out-of-state resident tuition cost is $15,420. The average net price is incredibly low at $3,814 and only 20% of students have to borrow funds to pay for their education. A low net price can be linked to the high amount of scholarships John Jay provides each year, which is over $3.2 million.
While the college does offer on-campus housing, many students live on off-campus. These costs and basic living expenses are not included in the price of tuition. Students can also expect to pay for additional education costs such as books, supplies, and course or lab fees. And a budget for lifestyle and entertainment may also be necessary.

Academics
The academic realm of possibilities at John Jay are nearly endless with 31 majors, 40 minors, 17 master’s degrees, and 3 doctoral programs. Students can select from almost any criminal justice-related field including criminal justice, forensic psychology, criminology, and public administration. All programs are open to any type of students such as veterans, continuing education students, professional education, and international students. Special in-service programs also exist for the NYPD, FDNY, and the DOC.
To provide students with the best chance for success, John Jay works to offer flexible and well-rounded programs and experiences. As such, students can complete all or part of various degrees online and schedule virtual meetings with faculty for advisement. The community is a critical component of the educational experience as well, by encouraging students to participate in local events and activities. These combined experiences help students to integrate successfully into diverse and inclusive working environments upon graduation.
The wide range of degree specializations assist with the strong retention rate of 80%. However, graduation rates are quite low at 30% and 52% for four-year and six-year graduation rates, respectively. It’s highly likely these low rates are related to the fact most students work full-time jobs as they pursue higher education and other students are continuing their education over several years rather than being able to commit to a full-time student course load.
