Overview of Fort Valley State University (FVSU)

FVSU students have more on their plate than academics, however. They are in pursuit of a well-rounded educational experience that will prepare them for a lifetime of leadership.

In their off time, FVSU students can spend time on campus, enjoying the enormous acreage since this school has one of the largest campuses among Georgia's public universities. Many will enjoy time in the health and physical education complex where they will find the school bookstore, workout rooms, swimming pool, and a walking track. Thus, FVSU students can continue to develop as physical, as well as intellectual, individuals.

FVSU students also expand their learning by joining one of many student organizations. There are clubs that help students gather around subjects that include criminal justice, history, marketing, science, and social work. The campus is also home to the Blue Machine Marching Band which gives students the chance to grow musically as well.

FVSU Tuition Cost & Financial Aid

But what does all of this cost? This is the question on the minds of many prospective students and their families. Since FVSU is a publicly funded institution, the costs are lower for Georgia state residents. In fact, a full year of tuition, books, supplies, and fees at the school only runs around $7,500 for state residents. Meanwhile, out-of-state students face academic costs of around $18,000.

For living expenses, students will see their gross costs running between $9,000 for off-campus living and $14,000 for all the amenities available on campus. When the total gross costs are tallied, Georgia residents have a price tag of up to $21,000 for on-campus living while non-residents pay $10,000 more. However, these gross costs are still only part of the story.

When the financial aid office chisels away at the gross costs of an FVSU education, they are able to get the price down considerably. In fact, the average net cost for a year of books, dining, and housing at FVSU is $13,000. And students in the lowest income bracket will often pay less. Their net costs average $12,000. Meanwhile, households that earn over $110,000 only pay a net price of $18,000. Thus, FVSU is a tremendous value in higher education.

Academics

While students find many reasons to attend Fort Valley State University, their primary goal is to earn a college degree and proceed to a life of success. Since FVSU is a state university, it is, of course, accredited, but there are other things students should consider as well. That is why educational researchers dig deeper into statistics such as the school's retention rate, graduation rate, and other factors to give students the whole picture.

The retention rate is a measure of how many first-time, full-time students return to campus for a second year. A high number indicates that students and their families are satisfied with the education they are receiving. In fact, FVSU's stellar 73% retention rate is very impressive. On top of that, FVSU posts a graduation rate of 43% with 28% transferring out to new programs. Since transfer students typically move on to find more challenges or specific degree programs that FVSU does not carry, these motivated students can be counted towards the graduation rate. Thus, the combined graduation rate is likely around 71%.

FVSU's success might be attributed to a few factors. For one, it's a university with a deep, rich history, which often indicates an institution that is well-proven in the academic realm. It also boasts a smaller student body, thus enabling more individual attention.

Outcome & Salary

Though Fort Valley State University offers great academic programs at an affordable cost, students still are curious to know their rate of return on their scholastic dollar. There are no guarantees for earnings, but researchers do dig into reported income data from alumni. Of the top-earning graduates from FVSU, the computer and information systems students report the highest median income, $50,000. Of the top five, criminal justice students pick up the rear with median incomes of $32,000. Students should note that incomes may in fact average out higher than this, and that the median salary is only the figure in the middle of the pack.
