Great Basin College is a four-year, public college founded in 1967. It is located in Elko, Nevada, which is near scenic, majestic mountains and relatively close to Salt Lake City, Utah, not far from the Idaho and Oregon borders. Academics


Whether one is in search of continuing education, skill development or degree completions, students who attend Great Basin will have access to unlimited educational opportunities. At the associate degree level, students will prepare for entry-level positions and transfer degree programs. The bachelor’s degree programs prepare students for careers, promotions, and graduate school.

Skill certificates are also available in a variety of fields of study. These programs are flexible to work with the busy schedules of students. Some programs are single courses, others consist of several short courses. Many are even available online. A total of 30 programs at all program levels are available. Bachelor’s degrees at Great Basin prepare students to become professionals and for management in both private and public sectors, including in English, nursing, and social science.

It’s also possible to pursue adult basic education programs. These courses are available to native and non-native English speakers. Subjects are designed to help with basic math, reading, and writing skills. Many graduates will eventually go on to complete associate or bachelor’s degrees upon successfully completion of these prep courses. Another option for students is to pursue non-credit training programs for career development. Career training programs include computing technology and healthcare training.

To assist with successful course completion, the college offers a variety of services including live tutoring, placement testing, and computer labs. They also have a decent student-to-faculty ratio of 17 to 1. As a result of these initiatives, the retention rate is 56% and the graduation rate is 47%. These figures are reasonable in comparison to national averages and the fact many students work while they pursue degrees and transfer to other colleges to finish bachelor’s degrees.

Students, community members, and alumni all have access to the Career Services Center. The services offered through the center help with careers in a number of ways such as career planning, job offer managing, career assessing, interview practice, negotiating, and job searching. Everyone also has access to the CareerOneStop and O*net, which are career resource services that offer career advice, career information, workforce development, job seeking, career testing, and career matching.

The Academic Advising Center is available in addition to Career Services to help connect potential employees with businesses, as well as access to job search websites. Great Basin College also offers a Veterans Resource Center with services, tools, and resources specifically related to the needs of veterans, including dedicated spaces for socializing and studying. All veteran students will also be assigned to an assistant and outreach coordinator to help manage the stresses and challenges of veteran students.
