The price tag of a year’s tuition for undergraduate students at JSU is $8,445 for in-state residents and $9,445 for out-of-state students. Over 95% of students accept financial aid in some form, from grants to student loans. Scholarships also help lower the net price average to $14,050. Another $16,000 will be necessary to pay for additional expenses such as books, supplies, and room and board. Academic offerings at JSU include five specialized colleges including business, education and human development, health sciences, liberal arts, and science, engineering and technology. Each college has a wide array of majors and concentrations at all degree and program levels such as degrees, certificates, and research. There are a total number of 45 undergraduate programs and 48 graduate programs. A growing number of online programs are available each year. Currently, students can pursue 19 online degrees.

To support the academic endeavors of Jackson State students, the university offers several dedicated centers including the Margaret Walker Center, Richard Wright Center, and the COFO Center. For students who excel in degree programs, a designated honors college is available. Students in these programs often have an advantage over others in job searches. Regardless of the program, all students will experience a challenging curriculum in a supportive environment that leads to both professional and personal success.

JSU has a respectable retention rate of 77%. However, the on-time graduation rates for four years and six years are significantly lower than average, sitting at rates of 20% and 38%. One reason could be that they have a higher student-to-faculty ratio of 14 to 1. It could also be that students complete programs while they work full-time, resulting in them taking fewer classes than recommended to graduate within four or six years.

A Career Services Center is available to all students to help find employment while they pursue degrees, as well as to find full-time employment with local, regional, national, and international employers upon graduation. Students can find co-ops, part-time jobs, internships, and job placement opportunities through the center. It is also possible to participate in interview preparation and access to the job search database.

Another JSU career advantage is to work with the CEO Student Ambassador Program. This program allows students to interact and engage with corporations, fellow students, the community, and alumni about the benefits of participating in the Career Services Center. There is also a Tiger Career Closet program, which provides students with appropriate job interview attire if they do not have the means or access to their own. A wide array of businesses participate in and sponsor the center including Regions, Yates Construction, Union Pacific, Enterprise, Circle K, State Farm, Ingalls Shipbuilding, and others.
