However, Missouri residents are able to take advantage of their address to land more affordable tuition rates from their favorite institution. In fact, Missouri residents see a gross cost of tuition, books, and academic fees running only around $12,000. Non-residents must pay an inflated rate that is close to $30,000.

To arrive at the total cost, researchers include the cost of living in St. Louis. This yields a gross price tag of over $30,000 for Missouri residents who live off campus and $29,000 for campus dwellers. Non-residents' gross costs hit around $48,000 for off-campus living and $46,000 to live on campus. These figures are in line with other public universities, but the final net price comes down even more.

Once the financial aid office applies grants and scholarships to the bill, the net costs fall dramatically. Thus, the average net cost for a full year, including living costs, is only $10,000. The lowest-earning households then pay around $9,000. Households that report earnings in excess of $110,001 still only pay under $18,000 for a year of learning and living in St. Louis.

This reputation caught the attention of our researchers, who decided to investigate UM-SL's academic statistics. In particular, researchers looked at the school's retention rate, graduation rate, and other vital educational stats to form an objective view that aspiring students can trust.

The retention rate is a metric that measures how many first-time, full-time students return to the St. Louis campus for a second year. Given that UM-SL students return at a rate of 73%, researchers concluded that students and their families are pleased with the curriculum, faculty, and campus resources.

These figures remain strong through graduation. UM-SL students study hard and earn a diploma at a rate of 58%. The school regrettably did not report their transfer out rate. They found that, among students who reported, that STEM fields dominated the list of top earnings. Electrical engineering department graduates led the pack, with a median reported salary of nearly $81,000. The fifth top earning degree holders were civil engineering students, who reported a median salary of $61,000. In the middle of the pack were the management information systems degree students, who reported median earnings of just under $70,000.
