While the long-term value of a college education is impossible to quantify, the up-front costs are very evident. Since UNM is a publicly funded university, the gross costs for in-state students are as low as possible. For their purely academic costs, in-state students pay under $10,000 for a year's worth of tuition, books, and fees. For out-of-state students who aren't taking advantage of the Western Undergraduate Exchange program, courses, books, and fees run over $25,000. When all living expenses are tallied, New Mexico residents pay a top cost of just over $25,000 for off-campus living while non-residents pay over $41,000.

The University of New Mexico offers undergraduate students a phenomenal value in higher education. Not only do they offer nearly 100 top quality baccalaureate degree programs, but those students find that the campus is fun and nurtures their long-term personal and career goals. This is evident in the educational statistics the institution files with the Department of Education.

One of the chief statistics researchers focus on is UNM's retention rate. This statistic is a measure of how many first-time, full-time students return to campus for a second year. When this number is high, it's assumed that students are highly satisfied with the institution's curriculum, faculty, and campus resources. Given that UNM posts a retention rate of 77%, it's clear that students on the Albuquerque campus are very satisfied with their college experience. After graduation, alumni are polled for their salary and other information. Once the numbers are tallied, it turns out that UNM's top earning graduates are from the registered nursing department and the report median salaries that top $70,000. This is not surprising, given the high demand for competent, licensed healthcare workers. The fifth best median salaries are reported by students with degrees in computer and information sciences, who earn over $65,000. Other top earners are from the engineering department, though RNs with associate degrees also make the top five earners list.
