If you want to attend here, you won’t be able to live in a dorm. It’s better to find an apartment elsewhere in Schaumburg. Or you may decide to attend online from your own community. Because of its online status, the student-faculty ratio is higher than normal: 38 to 1. This doesn’t mean much though, since classes are nearly all online. No matter where you attend from, you’ll likely need to email your professors to discuss any difficulties you may be having with your classes.

You’ll receive letters from whichever college you choose to attend spelling out the various costs that you will be charged. The sticker price covers tuition, but the total price includes tuition, lab fees, books, food, rent and utilities, and other various costs. Remember, AIU doesn’t offer on-campus housing, though you may lower these costs significantly if you attend from home and don’t have to worry about rent, utilities, food, etc. Altogether, the average cost comes up to $19,476. Tuition for in-state and out-of-state students is the same: $11,965.

After your financial aid has paid for much of the price, some funds will likely still be outstanding. What’s left is the average net price and, for AIU, this averages out to $12,555. First year students who apply for financial aid receive funding that pays for most of, but not all of the charges. About 677 of these students received grants or scholarships averaging about $5,753. After you complete your first year at AIU, you may decide whether to stay there or transfer to a different university. The number of students who choose to stay after their first year is called the retention rate. And, if you do stay, you’ll be one of the 41% of students at AIU who do stay. This rate is lower than the usual rate, but this is likely to be attributed to the fact that the classes are nearly all online. This format doesn’t engender school loyalty the way in-person classes do.

The 4-year graduation rate is 12% and the 6-year graduation rate is 15%. However, because AIU is mostly an online university, both evening classes and distance learning are available.
