When students aren't buried in their studies, Youngstown offers ample opportunities to forge a well-rounded education. Students can burn off stress in the recreation center, join a club and enrich themselves with like-minded peers, or enjoy cultural events that enlighten as they entertain. The Rec Center devotes 12,000 sq. ft. to strength and conditioning equipment, provides a 53' climbing wall, and offers a wide range of fitness classes for all levels. Altogether, there are six recreation facilities on campus so students can catch a workout after any class.

For those who'd like a bit of friendly competition, there are intramural leagues and club sports, as well. Club sports up the ante with competition between other schools in the area. Club sports include, but are not limited to, lacrosse, tennis, ultimate frisbee, clay target, bowling, and bass fishing. If a student is interested in a sport, YSU is listening. Interest has been expressed for staring club sport teams in these areas: archery, disc golf, esports, and rugby, among others.

Youngstown State University is funded by Ohio taxpayers, so they will find a lower tuition rate than their out-of-state peers, though not by much. Interestingly, tuition rates are virtually identical for in-state and out-of-state students at Youngstown. Each pays around $11,000 for a year of classes, books, and academic fees. However, our researchers decided to look into the statistics that support these reasons. They unearthed figures for YSU's retention rate, graduation rate, and student-to-faculty ratios.

The retention rate measures how many first-time, full-time students return to campus for their second year. A high rate indicates that students and their families are pleased with the school's curriculum, faculty, and campus resources, among other factors. Since YSU reports a very competitive 75% retention rate, researchers were impressed. Then the graduation rate comes in a bit lower than you like to see at 47%, with 19% reported as transferring elsewhere. Researchers see transfer students as highly motivated individuals who transfer to another campus in order to find the exact program they desire, and significant numbers graduate from these new programs. Thus, researchers can add transfers to the graduation rate to find that somewhere around 66% of Youngstown students graduate from college, whether in Youngstown or elsewhere.

These stellar numbers may be attributed to a number of factors, but one standout is the student-to-faculty ratio. Youngstown reports an average class size of only 17 students.
