Morgan State University (MSU) is public, historically Black (HBCU), research university located in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1867, the institution is now that state’s largest HBCU. The university is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund but is not part of the University System of Maryland.

MSU Tuition Cost & Financial Aid


The tuition and fees for the 2022-2023 academic year vary depending on the residency status and the degree sought. In-state students enrolled full-time (12 or more credits) in undergraduate programs will pay approximately $4,004, while out-of-state students will pay $9,240 for the same number of courses. Part-time students with residency will pay $332 per credit hour, while non-residents pay $711 per credit hour. The cost for graduate students is also charged per credit, with in-state students paying $537 each and out-of-state students paying $976 each.

Prospective students will need to pay for more than tuition and fees, however. Morgan State University requires undergraduates pay for health insurance each semester, with the cost fluctuating. For those unable to live off campus, room and board will also be necessary. The university offers various options that range from $3,482 to $6,425. Resident and commuter meal plans range from $2,149 to $2,599, which dining dollar plans as low as $250.

All Morgan State University students applying for financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The results will be reviewed before an aid package is sent. The university is a Carnegie-classified high research (R2) institution providing instruction to a multiethnic, multiracial, multinational student body and offering more than 140 academic programs. Students can choose from degrees at the baccalaureate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Academic certificates are also available, as are online programs for distance learners.

Morgan State University is one of very few HUBCs that offer a comprehensive range of academic programs in business, engineering, education, architecture, social work, and hospitality management.

Morgan State University has a Center for Career Development that provides assistance to students and alumni throughout the decision-making process. The university offers various types of assistance, including career assessments, counseling, and experiential learning opportunities, as well as access to a career resource center and numerous job fairs. The Center for Career Development also helps many local companies and organizations recruit interns, part-time workers, and full-time employees via a management system called Handshake.
