North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T), most commonly referred to as North Carolina A&T State University, is a public, Historically Black, land-grant, research institution located in Greensboro, North Carolina. Founded by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1891, it was the first college for people of color established in the state. It’s also the largest historically black university in the country, as well as number one in degrees awarded to African Americans in North Carolina.

Nationally recognized for excellence in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering (STEM) education, North Carolina A&T State University (N.C. A&T) is dedicated to preparing students to advance the human condition and facilitate economic growth. The U.S. News and World Report ranked the institution as the number one historical black college and university in America. It’s also among the top national universities.

The total student population is 13,322. Of those, 11,596 are pursuing undergraduate degrees. The university also employs 480 full-time and 363 part-time faculty members, the majority of whom are responsible for instruction. There are approximately 20 faculty members providing research and public service support. In fact, North Carolina A&T State University faculty researchers earned $78.2 million in contracts and grants during the 2021 fiscal year. The resulting student-to-faculty ratio is 19:1, which is slightly below average. Additionally, however, there are 250 graduate assistants. While the majority of these students work in a research capacity, some do offer instructional support.

N.C. A&T Tuition Cost & Financial Aid


The actual cost of earning an education at North Carolina A&T State University will depend on the number of course credits taken and residency status, as well as whether or not campus housing is utilized. Notably, the institution is implementing the Fixed Tuition Program, as required by North Carolina General Statute 116-143.9. As of fall 2016, tuition rates at all University of North Carolina higher education schools became fixed for eight consecutive semesters. To remain eligible, students must remain continuously enrolled at the constituent institution during the entire tuition period. Those exempt from fixed tuition include non-resident students, graduate students, continuing education students, dual-enrollment program students, second degree seeking students, non-degree seeking students, and online students.

In-state, undergraduates students enrolled in 12 or more credit hours during the 2020-2021 academic year were charged $4,637 in tuition, fees, and insurance per semester. Non-residents owed more, however, with a total cost of $11,392 per semester. Those choosing to live on campus were also assessed housing fees between $2,105 and $3,447. Those cost of a meal plan ranged from $1,745 to $1,925, with less expensive commuter options available.

Graduate students also pay tuition at either in-state or non-resident rates. North Carolina residents enrolled in nine or more credit hours paid $5,239 per semester, while non-residents were charged $11,639 for the same course load. These rates include tuition, fees, and insurance.

Those enrolled in online programs paying different rates as well. In-state undergraduate students taking 12 or more credit hours of classes were charged $1,440 per semester, while non-residents paid $6,912 for the same course load. Online graduate students with North Carolina residency who were enrolled in nine credit hours were charged $2,097, while out-of-state students taking the same number of classes owed $7,740. Online students are also assessed various fees.

Students must also anticipate the cost of books and supplies, as well as transportation and miscellaneous personal expenses. Those living off campus with family may be able to save significantly on room and board.

Money Magazine ranked North Carolina A & T State University as the most affordable of North Carolina’s top universities. The institution believes any student who wishes to pursue their educational goals should be able to do so. To achieve this, the university offers various forms of assistance. Incoming students are encouraged to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This determines grant, scholarship, and work-study availability. During the 2020-2021 academic year, 95% of students entering postsecondary education for the first time at the university received some form of financial assistance. While many were awarded grants and scholarships, 69% of students still required loans.

The university also offers online degree programs, with no boundaries between the physical and virtual campus. Remote study options are administered to address the special needs of distance learners, with universal access to academic, agricultural, and technical areas of study taught by the same experienced, expert faculty.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), North Carolina A&T State University had a first-year undergraduate retention rate of 77% for full-time students and 50% for part-time students in fall 2020. Notably, the national average is 68%. This data indicates that most students enrolled at the university full-time were pleased enough with their academic and extracurricular experiences that they chose to return to the institution for a second year.

Graduation rates for North Carolina A&T State University slightly lower. Of full-time, first-time students who began their studies in 2015, 53% graduated within 150% of normal time. The preferred graduation timeframe is four years, but only 29% of the students included in the study completed all requirements within this time. However, the transfer-out rate was also 24%, so a significant percentage of students likely graduated from another institution.

North Carolina A&T State University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), which is recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
