The University of Massachusetts system offers students many terrific options, and their Dartmouth campus is no exception. The mid-sized campus educates over 6,000 undergraduate students and nearly 2,000 enrolled in master's degree programs. Since the school is rather small for a public institution, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth or UMD) claims to offer a private college experience at a public tuition price tag. Undergraduates can choose between 60 undergraduate major degree programs and 68 undergraduate minor concentrations. UMD also offers a wealth of online degree options in fields such as accounting, history, nursing, and crime and justice.
Overview of University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth & UMD)
The stellar academic programs are only part of the story, however. UMD students have loads of on-campus opportunities to expand their learning in ways the classroom doesn't touch. For instance, after class, students can engage with others in over than 180 clubs and other organizations that focus on specific interests. Clubs also offer students the opportunity to gain a position of leadership.
For less-structured time, students can drop by the Fitness Center where they can get a great workout. Facilities include a full range of weight training machines and equipment, cardio machines, and sport courts for a variety of pick-up game fun. The campus also supports competitive sports in the form of varsity athletics for those aspiring sports stars and intramural leagues for casual competition.

UMD Tuition Cost & Financial Aid
When many UMass Dartmouth students mention their school's name, their friends may first assume they mean the Ivy League campus that shares the Dartmouth name. However, the UMass institution comes with a significantly lower gross price tag, to say the least. State residents pay around $16,000 for a year's worth of tuition, books, and other educational supplies. Meanwhile, their out-of-state friends pay nearly $32,000 for the same academic excellence. After living expenses are tallied, Massachusetts state residents pay around $30,000 on average and non-residents are in the neighborhood of $45,000.
These affordable costs are not the end of the story, however. UMD's financial aid office is able to reduce costs tremendously. Their efforts yield an average net price of $22,000, inclusive of all living expenses. This figure drops to an average net price of $17,000 for the school's lower income students and then approaches $25,000 for families who earn over $110,000. Still and all, these figures are minuscule when compared to the other Dartmouth.

Academics
The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth offers students a somewhat smaller campus relative to its other campuses, such as UMass Amherst. The cozy environs on the Dartmouth campus provide ample support for students who are serious about their academics. The strong academics on the Dartmouth campus are borne out in educational statistics such as the retention rate, graduation rate, and others.
Our researchers consider the retention rate important because it measures how many first-time, full-time UMD students return for a second year of terrific faculty, curriculum, and campus resources. Indeed, UMD's retention rate does not disappoint in that it shows that over 70% of students are on campus for their second year. Then, 54% stick around and graduate, with 32% transferring elsewhere.
While 54% is a strong figure, especially for a publicly funded institution, researchers also weigh the transfer rate as a positive indicator of academic strength. That's because transfer students tend to seek more competitive universities or universities that offer specific programs they desire. Thus, these motivated scholars have received a firm foundation on the Dartmouth campus and can be considered as a positive reflection on the academic programs there.
