The State Boards of Accountancy were created to assure the public that the CPA professionals are licensed, regulated and operating at the highest level. Each state may have slightly different requirements or costs to become a certified CPA in his or her preferred state. You can learn more about your states requirements and costs to be able to take the CPA exam and become a licensed CPA below.

There are 55 licensing jurisdictions that provide regulatory oversight whenever a CPA is practicing within the statutorily defined scope of practice of public accountancy. Public accountancy is regulated at the state level, with each state maintaining an independent board of accountancy that defines and upholds standards. The NASBA then assists the different states boards of accountancy to help maintain a best practices in the accounting professional across the U.S.

The NASBA was founded in 1908 to organize and bring together best practices of financial accounting to protect the public and provide sound reporting practices.
